Onion and Garlic Genomes Available

19:45 29 January 2026 in Data sets, General News, Web Version

We have added two large genomes for Allium cepa (onion) and Allium sativum (garlic). Both assemblies contain exceptionally long chromosomes, some exceeding 2 Gbp in length. We also located a genetic map for onion on Figshare that includes marker coordinates anchored to the genomic sequence. With these positions available, Persephone can now align the genetic map directly to the chromosome assemblies.

Eight chromosomes of garlic are linked with maps of onion by orthologous gene pairs. Visualization of full genome alignment is now avaiable under Synteny matrix/Parallel layout.
