The International Weed Genomics Consortium (IWGC) provides a platform for private and public collaboration to develop genomic tools and resources and to stimulate global research in weed biology and management. With their help, we picked 14 most popular weed genomes and added them to our Persephone portal.

The weed genomes from the list above have high-quality sequences. Most of them are published with gene annotation and can be interlinked by using orthologous gene pairs. When the gene models are not yet available, we can align the maps using the tag technique – the short subsequences (tags) form marker tracks where common tags are automatically connected.

The thin lines of green color represent the orthologs. The red lines connect common markers. Chromosomes from Poa annua and Poa infirma are shown.

As you probably know, having bare genomic sequences without any annotation is still enough to align maps – they can now be compared in real-time by using the minimap2 function of Persephone.

The chains produced by the real-time minimap2 are clustered and filtered.
